As
I walk around Highbridge I feel a sense of
community, a community that I look forward to being
a part of. I am finally returning to my
birthplace, The Bronx. Only living in the Bronx
until I was seven, I still call it the place "
where I grew up". I spent my weekends as a child
visiting my grandmother, attending Yankee games and
at the Bronx zoo.
After
earning an undergraduate degree in Psychology from
Marymount Manhattan College, I worked in a Residential
Treatment Centers as a Teachers Associate. I am now
working towards a master's degree in Social Work at
Fordham School of Social Services. My life experiences
have taken me through different states, communities and
ways of life. Throughout these experiences I have
realized that life does not always work out the way you
may plan it but I also realizes that there are thing you
can do to change it.
As
an intern, at the Highbridge Community Life Center
Storefront, I look forward to meeting and addressing
the people of Highbridge. It is nice to know that I
am interning for a place that is committed and has
the desire to help the people of the community. At
the storefront my day consists of working one-on-one
with the adult education students giving them the
resources they may need during their education at
Highbridge. My favorite part of the day is talking
to the students and learning about them and their
lives. I firmly believe that in order to reach out
to someone who has traveled a different road,
you must start by trying to understand his or her
journey. Understanding falls hand in hand with
acceptance. If you can understand a person's
background, goals, values, hopes and fears, then you
can easily grow to accept them and their journey.
