Basic Education Teachers:
| | | Carlos Ortiz | | I came to Highbridge in 1989 as an ESL teacher. After a week or so I said to myself "this looks like a good job." In the years that followed I became a GED teacher and a Citizenship teacher. After 18 years - almost one hundred GED's, hundreds of new citizens and thousands of new English speakers (plus a pension and a 3% raise in 2006.) I can tell everyone - THIS IS A GREAT JOB! | | Classes | BENL AM, BENL PM |

| | | Dawudu Haneef | | My central goal as a teacher is to provide students with an understanding of the social world in which they live and how it got that way. This, I hope, would allow students to assume the roles of various stakeholders in a debate, contemplate multiple views on controversial issues such as the civil war, brown versus the board of education, etc, and develop skills in supporting one's opinion with facts and examples. Highbridge Community Life Center has given me a platform and an opportunity, as a GED teacher, to pursuit this goal. It is in this context that I am convinced that teaching is almost everything. | | Classes | GED AM - PM 2 |

| | | Jennifer Outlaw | | I grew up riding horses and eating fried chicken. Now, I'm riding trains and eating rice and beans. Many things are different from my years of youth in South Caroline, yet some things are the same (I'm riding horses in my dreams). Even so, I love New York and I love teaching and I'm glad to be able to enjoy both in the Highbridge Community. | | Classes | ESOL 1B, ESOL 3 Eve |
